Purpose-Driven Tourism: Decameron Salinitas' Commitment to Biodiversity in El Salvador

In a context where sustainable tourism is gaining global relevance, hotel chains are beginning to take on a new challenge: not only to reduce their environmental impact, but to turn every travel experience into an opportunity to protect biodiversity and raise awareness about vulnerable ecosystems.

With this vision, Hoteles Decameron has been strengthening various environmental initiatives in the destinations where it operates, understanding that tourism can become a tool for social and environmental transformation when it actively involves travelers, collaborators, and local communities in the protection of the natural environment.

One of the most representative projects of this commitment is “Voices and Echoes of the Fauna” ("Voces y Ecos de la Fauna"), developed by Decameron Salinitas in El Salvador, an environmental education initiative that seeks to raise awareness about the importance of protecting wildlife and preserving ecosystems through participatory and pedagogical experiences.

The program, which was recently recognized as one of the winners of the 2025 Decameron
Biodiversity Contest in the environmental education and awareness category, has promoted
workshops, interactive activities such as sea turtle releases, and educational days aimed at guests, collaborators, children, and nearby communities, fostering a more conscious and respectful relationship with nature.

The Sustainability Strategy

The initiative is part of the corporate sustainability strategy promoted by the hotel chain. During the 2025 edition of the Decameron Biodiversity Contest, 19 hotels from six countries participated, benefiting more than 2,250 species through conservation actions, environmental education, ecosystem cleaning, and corporate volunteering. Additionally, more than 4,750 hours of training and 5,600 hours of volunteering focused on biodiversity and sustainability were developed.

For Decameron, such initiatives reflect how sustainability has ceased to be an isolated component within the tourism industry to become an integral part of the traveler's experience. Today, in addition to enjoying a destination, tourists seek to connect with local culture, understand the value of ecosystems, and participate in responsible practices during their trips.

“We believe that tourism has the potential to generate a real positive impact in the territories where we operate. When we manage to have a person learn about the species that inhabit an ecosystem, understand the risks they face, and actively participate in their care, the trip acquires a much more transformative purpose,” said Ana Lucia Giraldo, Sustainability Director at Decameron.

The Hotel Chain's Commitment to the Environment

The company has been strengthening this sustainability approach throughout its operation.
Recently, Decameron certified 100% of its hotels with the international Ecostars seal, an
accreditation recognized by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), which evaluates the environmental performance of each property and promotes responsible standards within the hotel industry.

Beyond the environmental actions implemented within the hotel operation, “Voices and Echoes of the Fauna” seeks to generate a lasting impact on nearby communities, promoting values of
environmental responsibility, empathy, and conservation through education and collective
participation.

The initiative also responds to a growing trend within the tourism industry where travelers are increasingly aware of the environmental impact of their decisions, thus valuing experiences aligned with nature protection and the sustainable development of destinations.

Through programs like this, Decameron seeks to demonstrate that tourism can go beyond
entertainment and become a platform to inspire positive changes, strengthen the relationship
between people and ecosystems, and actively contribute to the conservation of biodiversity in Latin America and the Caribbean.
