The biodiversity that unites us: This is how we experienced the 2025 Biodiversity Contest at Decamer
During 2025, we held a special edition of our Biodiversity Contest, focused on initiatives related to domestic animal care, wildlife protection, and environmental education and awareness. This version allowed us to highlight and specifically recognize the efforts made by our hotels to promote animal welfare and responsible coexistence with all forms of life.
The participation of 19 hotels in 6 countries reflects the cross-cutting commitment of our operations to sustainability and biodiversity preservation, integrating these actions into daily operations and relationships with local communities.
Thanks to the projects developed by our teams, this contest achieved a significant impact, benefiting more than 2,250 species, intervening in 9,456 square meters through actions such as beach cleanups, tree planting, and the adaptation of spaces for rehabilitated wildlife, generating more than 4,750 hours of training focused on environmental education and awareness, and adding more than 5,600 hours of volunteer work led by committed employees. These results prove that sustainability is not an abstract concept, but a practice built with concrete, consistent actions aligned with our purpose.
In this edition, initiatives stood out in three categories: domestic animal care, wildlife care, and education and awareness. In domestic animal care, the recognized projects were Granjita El Pueblo: Vive, cuida y comparte from Hotel El Pueblo (PE), and Huella Costera from Hotel Barú (COL). In the wildlife care category, Decablue, developed by the Marazul, Maryland, Delfines, and Aquarium hotels in San Andrés, and Alas Libres from Hotel Cartagena, were highlighted. In education and awareness, a tie was recognized between the projects Voces y ecos de la fauna from Hotel Salinitas (ELS) and Centinelas del loro máscara roja from Hotel Punta Centinela (EC). As 2025 Global Winners, San Andrés (Marazul, Maryland, Delfines, and Aquarium), El Pueblo, and a tie between Salinitas and Punta Centinela were recognized.
For Ana Lucía Giraldo, Sustainability Director at Decameron, this contest reflects the spirit with which the company approaches environmental care: “Biodiversity is part of the territories that host us and the responsibility we assume as an organization. These projects demonstrate that when our teams get involved, sustainability stops being a concept and becomes a real action that generates a positive impact on the communities and ecosystems where we operate.”
At Decameron, we congratulate all participating teams for their dedication, creativity, and commitment. Each initiative presented proves that biodiversity is lived, protected, and honored day by day through our operations. Very soon, we will share more details about the participating projects, which this year stood out for being especially innovative, inspiring, and high-impact.
